Free Healthcare Platform for Shanghai Expats Launches [
In an effort to help the international community in Shanghai stay informed about health, a few individuals are using their resources to create a new project with big implications. Launched in spring, Healthy in Shanghai is a program of health and wellness seminars and workshops targeting the city’s foreign residents with the goal to help them become more acquainted with their new surroundings, navigate their healthcare options and offer a platform to discuss health-related topics.
Healthy in Shanghai leverages existing community resources and allows various trusted health partners to come together and align their knowledge of physical and mental health information. Nikki Lindgren, one of the key organizers from Xiersen, explains, “People can get information online about a lot of these topics, but the idea is to find a well-connected professional, sit in a room, meet people, ask questions and create more of an understanding and community around the topic. Since this is a project run by volunteers, there’s no income incentive and the idea is to connect existing resources in a very transient environment so more people can access this information. We aren’t reinventing the wheel, we are just asking supporting parties to use the knowledge they already have and address topics that really resonate with the community.”
With over 50 seminars and workshops planned for a 10-week session which started September 12, residents in Shanghai are invited to come and participate completely free of charge. Eighty percent of topics will be mental health-related, while the rest will be related to physical health. Participants can expect subjects to include parenting, managing work-related stress, relationship with teens and substance abuse, eating disorders, diabetes and much more.
Shanghai United Family Healthcare and Clinics are just one of many healthcare providers chipping in with their expertise. “Our physicians and staff are excited to support this inspiring community project by contributing their knowledge on a wide array of health and wellness topics. We hope to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the participants,” says Amanda Argentieri, SHU’s community relations coordinator.
To participate simply sign up on their website to the seminar of your choosing. Locations vary and are scattered throughout Shanghai to accommodate as many as possible.
